All these things at the same time...masterpiece. Favorite track: The Imbuing of the Oak.

about

In which:
Chapter 1
1765, Peckham Rye - an occult ritual performed around an oak tree by local merchant seeking to establish a new centre of power to rival the City fails, and they depart the scene disappointed, the months of preparation all for nothing again. The next day, the 7-year-old William Blake walks the seven miles from his home in Soho to the Rye. On the way, fearful of the devil, he sings a song to calm himself. Arriving at the Rye, he sees seven angels in the oak tree and is filled with inspiration.

Chapter 2
Almost a hundred years later, the 'Angel Oak' still stands on Peckham Rye, the subject of local legends about the visions of poets and farm girls, and vague associations with fertility and the healing of minor ailments. One morning, following a storm, a farmer wakes to find the oak gone, seemingly cut down and removed in the night, leaving just a stump. Some weeks later, rumours circulate that a dead tree is lying in the grounds of Capt Samuel Gunton, and that the captain is receiving more visitors than usual - many of them visitors from London bringing family members suffering from poor health, returning home later in the day, changed. Other visitors are staying longer, and lights are seen burning in the house later into the night than usual.

Chapter 3
More weeks pass and the people around Peckham Rye carry on with their lives though in a muted, somewhat gloomy manner. More visitors come and go at the captain's house. Some try to talk to the captain but he is never available to casual callers to answer questions and address rumours. One local lad is found dead in nearby Lapse Wood, after having apparently talked animatedly about gaining access to the grounds to see if the tree was really there. Farmers start seeing litter and scorch marks around the stump some mornings. Annie Jago, out walking in the evening, sees a faint glow above and around the stump. She tells her father but is forbidden from walking out in the evening again.
Soon, hooded men are spotted gathering at the stump some nights...
